Greenwich Society Events

7pm (for 7:30pm)
Monday 25th March 2019
West Greenwich Library

In June 2015 the Greenwich Society celebrated the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta at Runnymede. On 25th March we are unveiling the authorised facsimile - provided by the Magna Carta Barons Association - at the West Greenwich Library, where it hangs along with a translation for everyone to see.  A new home in the original estate of one of the rebel barons who forced this bill of rights from King John in 1215; Geoffrey de Say's estate was West Greenwich.

Members are invited to join us for the unveiling, to mark the occasion and to enjoy some conversation and light refreshments.

Our next outing will be Martin Heap’s Deli-diner in Deptford on the evening of Friday 5th April at 7 for 7.30pm. This is Martins new enterprise and he has offered a very competitive price and a great menu for Greenwich Society members. Martin and Bryony are friends to many of us and long-standing members of the Society and it would be good to see the event well attended.

The price is £27.50 per person for a 3 course meal with coffee and half a carafe of house wine per person. The options are: -

spicy prawn cocktail with avocado and cucumber salad, or
camembert and pumpkin quiche,

fried breaded lemon sole with an anchovy gribiche, mushy peas and rosemary fries or
sausage and mash with onion gravy and buttered cabbage
(vegetarian option available).

The final course will be a choice between dessert and cheese.

The restaurant is a short walk from Deptford Station and an even shorter walk from Deptford Bridge DLR. All the buses between New Cross up and Blackheath pass the door as does the 177 from Greenwich and parking in the streets around is not difficult at this time of evening.

We hope and expect that there will be a good turnout of members for this evening, so book early either by clicking on the button below -

or phoning Jackie Hicks on 02088 587363

The Chairman of the Greenwich Society – Jonathan Chandler – is presenting another Wine tasting evening to which members are cordially invited.

Having just returned from a favourite city – Palma de Mallorca – and wanting to think more of summer than winter, Jonathan will offer 13 wines from Spain to taste, sourced from Galicia to the Balearics and from bone dry to unctuous, all showing off the amazing variety of styles in wines from a country that sometimes is rated less highly than it should be. There is more to enjoy than just Cava and Rioja!

Monday 8th April
QA075 - Queen Anne Court
University of Greenwich
Old Royal Naval College

Tickets are £25 per person – including some light refreshments – bread, crackers, paté and cheeses. If you would like to join the tasting, please email Jonathan at -
